I Love Fremont and Jessie

Who could keep from adoring such a magnificent pair of losers?

In 1856, The Republican Party chose J.C. Fremont as its very first Candidate for President of the United States. He lost. That was just the start.

The Fremonts had the biggest, richest gold fields in all of California--45,000 acres--producing $16,000.00 in gold a week. They lost that.

On August 30, 1861, General Fremont issued the first Emancipation Proclamation in the United States. Lincoln countermanded it.

The Fremonts dreamed high--and missed the gold ring--by a hair's breadth. How could anyone help but love them?

Meet the daughter of one famous man, wife of another and amazing voice for women

While other little girls wore delicate slippers and studied music, Jessie wore sturdy Jefferson shoes and learned politics from her father, the dynamic red-haired senator from Missouri, Thomas Hart Benton. Jessie defied all custom by eloping with the handsomest man in Washington--John Charles Fremont--a penniless surveyor from South Carolina. While other ladies filled their hands with sewing, Jessie took up the pen in her husband's name and used it to entice pioneers to go west. Jessie faced the dilemma of all women past and present--how to use her strength, education and talent and at the same time embody the frail tenderness and piety so prized in women. Find out from the woman who urged President Lincoln to free the slaves.
